通用代詞 one, you, we

我們可以用 one, you 或 we 來泛指對話中的人們，包括說話者和聽者，用於不特指某一個人的時候。

One tends to have problems understanding different histories and cultures. 人們往往難以理解不同的歷史和文化。(或者用 You/We tend to have problems.)
In these situations, you must never lose your hope. 在這種情況下，你們决不能失去希望。
We are human, and will always make mistakes. 我們是人，總是會犯錯誤。

表達”人們”較正式的語體

One 比 we 或 you 更正式，而且很少用在口語中。然而，One 的所有格 one’s 更常用於口語一些。

Education always changes one’s life for the better. 教育總是讓人的生活變得更好。 (也可以用 your/our life.)
Poverty eats up one’s dignity. 貧窮吞噬了人的尊嚴。

可以作為主詞, 受詞…等

One, you, we 可以當主詞或受詞，或者它們經常以其反身代名詞的方式出現(oneself, yourself, ourselves)。

Sometimes the government treats you/us as if you/we were a child. 有時候，政府把你/我們當孩子一樣對待。
Success and failure always teaches you/us something about yourself/ourselves. 成功和失敗總是讓人們瞭解自己。
Helping others helps oneself. 幫助別人就是幫助自己。

用於句子中與主詞的一致性

我們通常可以選擇一個代名詞作為普遍的指稱我們或你/你們，但要注意的是在整個文本中需要保持說明對象的一致性。

You never know what your future will bring you. 
We never know what our future will bring us. 
不能說：You never know what our future will…

通用代詞 they

指代一群人

在英語中，我們經常使用 they 來泛指一般的人或更具體的人群，不包括說話者或聽眾，例如:某一個國家，城市，地區或某權威組織，警察等的人。

They speak English in the United States of America. 他們在美國說英語。
They are the smartest students in town. 他們是城裡最聰明的學生。
They warned us not to go out because of the pandemic. 他們警告我們不要因為疫情外出。

單數指稱（= 他或她）

在非正式英語中，我們使用 they, them 或 their 來指稱某一個人, 可以是男性或女性。許多語法學家認為這種用法不正確，但這個用法很普遍，即使在英語寫作上也很常見。

A good journalist should never reveal where they get their information. 一個好的記者永遠不應該透露他們從哪裡得到的資訊。
Before the class, every student said their name aloud. 上課前，每個學生都大聲說出自己的名字。

用 they, them, their 在句子中做單數指稱時, 句子前常會搭配一個不定代名詞(單數) 。

Someone has left their school uniform on the bus. 有人把校服忘在公共汽車上了。
Everyone attended, didn’t they? 每個人都參加了，不是嗎？
Nobody finished their work on time. 沒有人按時完成工作。
